Mobile Content Bits: Opera Widgets; Verizon Gets Out The Vote; AP On BlackBerry; Marvel Comics
—Opera Mobile gets widgets: Opera Mobile 9.5 has introduced widgets to its mobile browser that give users access to optimized content with one click. A new Opera Widgets SDK is now available for developers who wish to make customized content available on users’ home screens. Opera also released some widgets for download at a new page (http://widgets.opera.com). Finally, there’s a new developer competition (http://my.opera.com/widgets) being offered by Opera with $10,000 in cash prizes for best cross-device widget submissions. Release.
—Verizon aims to get out the vote: Just 15 days before the presidential election, Verizon Wireless is trying to get out the vote with a new mobile video campaign involving more than 40 celebrities. A shortened version of the Creative Coalition’s YouVote video, which was conceived and directed by filmmaker Sue Kramer, is now available to Verizon V CAST customers. The entire three-minute video features celebrities like Samuel L. Jackson, Susan Sarandon, Marcia Cross, Anne Hathaway and The Muppets.
—AP’s Mobile News Networks on BlackBerry: The Mobile News Network application which debuted as a unique application on the App Store last summer is now making its way to BlackBerry. The Associated Press application is now available as a free download (http://bb.apnews.com) for BlackBerry users. The organization said it’s eventually planning to make the application available on every smart phone. The Mobile News Network is the first product from AP’s Digital Cooperative. More than 16 million page views and a million local stories were tracked in August, according to the company. September numbers jumped to 26 million page views at least 1.5 million stories read. The network has grown to include 1,004 member and affiliate news outlets. Release.
—Marvel (NYSE: MVL) Comics Coming To Mobile: Marvel Entertainment International is working to adapt its comic books for mobile devices in Europe. Animation studio Campfire A/S is working with the company to pair the content down for mobile with unspecified interactive features. Marvel’s mobile catalog will first be made available in Scandinavia, Austria, Switzerland and Germany before it eventually gets pushed throughout Europe. The comics will cost $1.71 and monthly subscription packages are selling at $6.85. Release.
