Nokia announced today that it will be supporting Microsoft’s Silverlight browser plug-in that will help deliver video and other multimedia content to its smartphones. Silverlight will be available for its Series 60 (S60) smartphones that runs on Symbian OS, as well as for Series 40 devices and Nokia internet tablets.

Silverlight is already available for the wired internet and currently runs on both Windows and Mac OS.  As News.com reports  Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) has been busy pushing Silverlight as an alternative to Adobe’s Flash Player, signing on content partners including Entertainment Tonight, the NBA and NBC Universal (NYSE: GE). They plan to launch a version of Silverlight for Windows Mobile later this year. Microsoft said it chose to work with Nokia because it allowed them to reach a “huge number of mobile users,”—the combined number of S60, S40 an internet tablets included in the deal is in the hundreds of millions, according to Nokia (NYSE: NOK). Nokia, meanwhile, said by adopting Silverlight it was ultimately expanding the choice of mobile content that its consumers could access. Microsoft said the availability date for Silverlight on Nokia’s devices will be confirmed later (release).

Meanwhile, Microsoft is also planning to take Silverlight offline at some undetermined time in the future. According to News.com who interviewed John Case, general manager in Microsoft’s developer division, the software firm doesn’t have any immediate plans to release an offline version, but will “eventually” do, as customers will expect it. In February, Adobe (NSDQ: ADBE) launched Air, its platform that takes web applications offline.
