Microsoft, Nokia Set To Announce Alliance; Likely Over Web-Based Office
Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) and Nokia (NYSE: NOK) have scheduled a teleconference for Wednesday to announce an alliance—and the betting is that the two will announce some sort of partnership around the forthcoming web-based version of Office. Clues abound: Microsoft’s representative on the call is Stephen Elop, the president of the company’s business division, which includes Office. (Kai Öistämö, EVP for Nokia Devices, is representing Nokia). And CNET reports that Microsoft will announce a deal to “help get ... Office software onto that company’s mobile phones” although the article is devoid of details. Microsoft has said that the web-based version of Office will be accessible via mobile phones.
It’s not the first time that Microsoft and Nokia have announced an alliance. As ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley points out, Nokia agreed to support Microsoft’s Silverlight media player last year. And in 2007, Nokia agreed to include direct access to Microsoft’s Windows Live services, such as Hotmail, on some of its phones. We’ll have more details here tomorrow morning following the call, which is scheduled for 8 a.m. PT.
