Microsoft Doesn’t Want Its App Marketplace To Be A Dollar Store

Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) may have hit 1.5 billion downloads in its App Store, but Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) has a different goal in mind for its upcoming application Marketplace—revenues.

During a developer camp hosted by Microsoft yesterday at its Redmond headquarters, a mobile exec instructed developers to not be shy when it comes to pricing your applications, reports TechFlash. “It’s up to you play your pricing, but we would definitely want to promote that you make more money selling applications than selling your application in a dollar store,” said Loke Uei of Microsoft’s Mobile Developer Experience Team.

To help meet that goal, Microsoft is hosting a contest that will determine the winner by how much revenue a developer makes , not downloads. “I know, 99 cents is interesting—yes, consumers like to pay 99 cents for applications. But 99 cents, come on, I think your app is worth more than that.”
