New estimates are out detailing the size of the local advertising market opportunity for mobile players, like Foursquare, Gowala and others. In 2014, U.S. mobile local ad revenues will grow to $2.02 billion in 2014 from $213 million in 2009, according to data from BIA/Kelsey.

The research and consulting firm defines mobile local advertising as advertising that is targeted based on a user’s location and that is actionable on a local basis. BIA/Kelsey said it expects location-based ads to command a premium over non-local ads because of consumer buying intent and conversion levels.

Still, the mobile local advertising industry will make up only a sliver over the overall pie. In 2009, local mobile ads comprised up of only .2 percent of local media, and is estimated to grow to only 1.4 percent in 2014.
