Linux In A Fifth Of Mid/High-End Mobile Phones By 2013: Report

Linux will see growth in the mobile handset market, reaching 20 percent penetration by 2013 according to ABI Research. The prediction is based on solving problems with framework fragmentation and silicon requirements, and the researcher sees growing momentum behind the LiMo Foundation initiative, a marketing boost from Google’s (NSDQ: GOOG) Android efforts and Nokia’s (NYSE: NOK) support of Maemo and purchase of Trolltech. The Linux OS solutions will more cost-effective than current solutions according to ABI, which touts clever choice of public license support and the separation of proprietary items from open-source items as allowing OS vendors to generate revenue on the platform—and customize it themselves.
