LiMo Foundation Shows Progress; Has Momentum And Support
The LiMo Foundation has been running under the radar with competing mobile operating systems like Palm’s webOS, Google’s Android and Microsoft’s getting significantly more attention.
But today, it’s sticking its head up and saying that it has widespread support, and that we’ll see significant progress from the open-source Linux platform over the next two years. LiMo said all operator members, including Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ), Telefonica (NYSE: TEF), Orange and NTT DoCoMo (NYSE: DCM), have reaffirmed their intent to bring LiMo devices to market during 2009 and 2010. Release.
As a demonstration of that, Vodafone also said today it will launch its new 360 strategy on a LiMo phone first. The phone, which will launch in time for the holiday season, will sport the new service that unifies contacts from a number of sources, including the handset’s address book and from social networks. Glenn Harris, Vodafone’s Senior Business Development Manager, said the service will eventually be available for download to more than 100 devices, but for now “choosing to launch the new service strategy on LiMo shows our on going commitment” to the OS. After the H1 device from Samsung launches, it will be followed up shortly by the M1, Harris added.
