After being out of the spotlight for the last couple of months, while Palm (NSDQ: PALM), Android and even Windows Mobile, have gotten most of the mindshare, the LiMo Foundation fired back today with a handful of announcements before Mobile World Congress kicks off next week. The organization, committed to making open source a powerhouse in mobile, said today that it has two new carriers joining its ranks: SK Telecom (NYSE: SKM) and Telefonica (NYSE: TEF). The two carriers join others such as NTT DOCOMO, Orange, Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ) and Vodafone (NYSE: VOD).

In all, the 11 carriers represent nearly one billion subscribers. In addition to the carrier commitments, the Foundation is also on time with advancements being made to the technology. Companies involved include Access, Azingo, LG (SEO: 066570), Purple Labs and Samsung Electronics. LiMo is building a mobile operating system based on Linux, but it even has plenty of competition on that front with Google (NSDQ: GOOG) providing Android as open source (also based on Linux), and Symbian, which is now owned by deep-pocketed Nokia (NYSE: NOK) and is also on the road to becoming open source. Release can be found here.
