Ko Promoted To Yahoo Audience Head

Yet another management shuffle at Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO). Only ten months after being promoted to global head of Yahoo Mobile, David Ko is now also gaining responsibility for all of Yahoo’s content sites in North America, including News, Sports, and Finance, we have confirmed with the company. AllThingsD’s Kara Swisher first reported the news earlier today. Ko succeeds Jeff Dossett, who left his post as audience head in late May and subsequently joined an adventure travel startup. Since Dossett’s departure, his responsibilities have been split by Jimmy Pitaro, who runs vertical audience experiences, and Tim Mayer, who is in charge of search and social applications.

Ko has rapidly climbed the ranks at Yahoo. After running Yahoo’s mobile business in Asia Pacific, he was promoted to SVP of mobile last September, before getting the top mobile job in February. The division has lately shifted its focus to building services in the browser and apps for high-end smartphones. Here’s an interview we ran with him earlier this year, in which he talks about CEO Carol Bartz’s “love” for mobile.

His new title will be SVP of audience and mobile for North America—and, in a statement, a spokeswoman says Ko will contribute his “mobile expertise and proven ability to create innovative and engaging consumer experiences as Yahoo more tightly integrates mobile into the rest of the company and focuses on growth.”

With Ko’s promotion, at least one big position remains vacant at Yahoo: In July, CEO Carol Bartz said the company was “closing in on someone” to lead its international operations—but Yahoo still has not named an international chief. We reached out to Yahoo representatives for comment this morning and will update this post when we hear back.
