The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has recognized four international mobile TV standards: T-DMB, DVB-H, MediaFLO and OneSeg (ISDB-T) reports Korea Times. None of these are really global yet, but they’re all fairly dominant in their hometowns. The business models are still up in the air, with the article noting that TU Media (which runs the S-DMB service) is likely to have accumulated debt of 270 billion won (US$270 million) by the end of the year, and the broadcasters running the terrestrial service claim they’re pulling in less than 100 million won (US$100,000) in ad sales every month.

Meanwhile, LG Electronics (SEO: 066570) and Ericsson (NSDQ: ERIC) say they successfully demonstrated their MBMS (Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service) mobile TV service in Sweden last week, and that the system can be put into use as early as 2009 reports this Korea Times article. MBMS is designed to run over 3G networks, but using less spectrum than regular unicast systems. There’s several MBMS trials going on around the world.
