iPhone Users To (Finally) Get MMS

iPhone users—despite their inherent “coolness” quotient—have had to make do with sending simple SMS messages, instead of being able to embed funny pictures or video clips into their texts. The lack of MMS support for the iPhone has even sparked a lawsuit, since both Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) and AT&T (NYSE: T) advertised MMS as one of the the new features consumers would get if they bought the new iPhone 3G and 3GS (via 9to5Mac).

AT&T initially said the new iPhones would support MMS by this summer; that clearly didn’t happen. But according to Gizmodo, the wait for MMS will be over on September 25. In a statement, AT&T explained that the launch was delayed because it has been upgrading its network to support the “expected record volumes” of MMS traffic that will come from iPhone users.
It’s a lesson in mass data consumption that AT&T has had to learn the hard way, as it has increasingly come under fire from iPhone owners because its network has not been as fast—nor the call quality as good—as initially advertised. The company said wireless use on its network has grown by an average of 350 percent year-over-year for the past two years, so it’s trying to play catch-up by upgrading its 3G network in cities like San Francisco.
