iPhone Roundup: Coming To Verizon? Don’t Count On It; App Store Review Policy Changed

iPhone Coming to Verizon: There are signs that Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) is working on an EVDO version of the iPhone, possibly for Verizon (NYSE: VZ), 9to5mac reports. According to a tipster with “some Verizon insider credentials,” Apple might be announcing iPhones for the carrier as early as Macworld 2009, little more than three months from now. The story reinforces the rumor with recent Apple job postings for EVDO and CDMA engineers, but points out that WiMAX engineers have also been sought after. WiMAX would indicate that Clearwire (NSDQ: CLWR) and other WiMAX carriers might be in play as well. AT&T is supposed to have an exclusive on Apple’s iPhone into 2010, but 9to5mac shot down the USA Today story on the matter as “falsely reported rumors.” The deal ranges anywhere from two to five years, based on the various reports on the subject, but neither company has commented on details of the arrangement. Perhaps Verizon’s Open Development Initiative is presenting an opportunity for Apple to sidestep the arrangement with AT&T (NYSE: T).

Apple Requires App Ownership Prior To Review: This seems like a no-brainer. Apple has changed its App Store review policy to actually require users to own the application before they can review it. No more competitors sniping at each other anonymously without plunking down some cash first and no more diatribes against the cost of an application without at least using it. Apple didn’t make any big splash about the change, but TUAW noticed the change over the weekend. The company also changed how applications are ordered on the App Store after receiving an upgrade, AppleInsider reports. While applications’ release dates used to move up and place the application higher in the list of all applications, Apple is now organizing all applications based on their original release date. This should keep developers from getting an unfair advantage of another based solely on loopholes that enabled them to get an immediate jump in downloads and sales.
