Fired For Cause? Ex Motorola CFO Liska Sues Handset Maker
As if Motorola (NYSE: MOT) didn’t have enough problems, it now has to deal with a dispute with its former chief financial officer Paul Liska, who was dismissed from the troubled handset maker in late January. According to the WSJ.com citing an undisclosed source, Liska has filed a wrongful termination suit against Motorola on February 20 in the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois. The suit was prompted by Motorola’s filing with the SEC on Tuesday, which revealed that Liska had been “involuntarily terminated for cause” on February19. He was also asked to give back a $400,000 cash signing bonus. But this account differs from what Motorola has publicly said about Liska’s departure, and what the former CFO said he had been told by his ex-employers.
In its earnings call in early February, Motorola said it was replacing Liska, who had been with the company for a little less than a year, because it was postponing the handset unit spinoff. Liska who joined from Sears where he had been a restructuring expert, told the WSJ.com in a statement, “For approximately the next three weeks [after being dismissed on Jan. 29], I and my attorney had been told I was terminated without cause. Neither I nor my attorney have been contacted about this 180-degree change in Motorola’s representation concerning my dismissal.” This seems like yet another “self-inflicted” issue for Motorola—surely someone must have known that the two versions of whether Liska was dismissed with or without cause would come to light?
