Chris Sacca, Google’s (NSDQ: GOOG) head of special initiatives and the exec behind its push for open-access spectrum, is leaving the company to become an angel investor, according to VentureBeat. Sacca led Google’s efforts to get the FCC to attach open-access conditions to the 700 MHz spectrum licenses being auctioned in January, and Google has confirmed its intent to bid in that auction. Sacca also pushed for Google’s deal to offer citywide WiFi in San Francisco, though that effort was unsuccessful. Sacca will leave Google at the end of the month—slightly odd timing, considering the spectrum auction will commence shortly after that—to become an angel investor in early-stage tech companies. Google wouldn’t identify Sacca’s replacement or who would oversee the company’s wireless policy issues, instead only thanking him for his contributions.
