Updated: Glu Mobile Appoints Co-Chairman Bill Miller As Interim President And CEO
Glu Mobile (NSDQ: GLUU), a mobile games publisher, said that its co-chairman William J. Miller will assume the position of interim President and CEO effective immediately. Release.
Glu announced this summer that Greg Ballard, the company’s current President and CEO, was stepping down to pursue other opportunities. The board has been conducting a search for a permanent replacement since, but has apparently had no luck. It now says a successor will be named in early 2010. Miller and Daniel Skaff will continue to serve as co-Chairmen. Prior to joining Glu’s board, Miller worked as an adviser to a number of tech companies stretching back to November 1999. Prior to that, Miller served as Chairman and CEO, among other roles, of Avid Corporation, which provides tools to multimedia companies. UPDATE: In an interview, Miller said Ballard was originally planning to stay until Glu found a replacement up until Jan. 1, but as they started their planning process for 2010, it made sense to have participate that would still be around in the new year. “That’s the reason for the timing. The reason is so I can get into the 2010 plan and then carry it into the new year.”
As for how the search is going, Miller said “We said that we’d hope to have it filled by the first of the year, and that still might happen, but I’m not going to guarantee it. It could still happen before the first of the year, but it has taken somewhat longer than we predicted.” Part of the problem was that they kicked off the search during the summer when it was more difficult to line up interviews. “We still see candidates that are within our description, and the opportunity continues to be attractive.”
Miller said they are looking for a candidate that can tackle the company’s challenges head-on. “Over the longer-term, the real challenge is to plot a course through a very fluid and rapidly evolving environment for casual games entertainment—whether you look at smartphones, the traditional carrier markets, the capabilities of the hardware, or the way game is monetized. It’s changing practically by the hour, and managing your way through that and getting Glu positioned to take advantage of the enormous opportunities is the key business challenge. After that, of course, the ultimate challenge is that you have to produce games that delight your users. They have to be compelling and interesting to play and worthwhile. If we do that, then we will be able to make the business successful.”
