Is nothing sacred? In Scotland, Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) has enlisted radio network builder Arqiva to install 2G and 3G mobile networks, and WiFi, on Glasgow’s subway system. SPT itself will use the new nets for ticketing and other systems, but the main draw is underground access to mobile internet content and phone calls. Work begins this month on the Buchanan Street station, extending to another 14, but access doesn’t extend to trains themselves. SPT reckons it will make Glasgow the first UK city with a wired subway. Indeed, Transport For London will this spring trial in-train underground mobile between two stations but wholesale deployment has been pushed back to 2009. UK subway users enjoy a range of freesheet newspapers while waiting for a train - the wiring of the underground could add mobile content services to that mix. Announcement.
