GetJar To Provide Virgin Mobile France’s Upcoming App Store With Free Applications
GetJar, the independent mobile app store, has struck a deal with Virgin Mobile France, to provide the French carrier’s new mobile app store to launch on Wednesday with its entire selection of free applications, some 45,000 in total. The deal is the second for Getjar this month. Earlier in June, it announced a similar outsourcing deal for Sony Ericsson’s upcoming app store. The 4-year old San-Mateo, California-headquartered company, which counts Accel Partners as one of its backers, also supplies Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) Ireland and 3UK with apps.

Getjar’s recent outsourcing deals show just how dramatically the mobile app landscape has changed. It wasn’t that long ago that Getjar wasn’t on the best of terms with carriers, some of whom blocked the service, afraid that its offering might eat into their own similar products. Moreover, at Mobile World Congress, where Nokia (NYSE: NOK) had just launched its Ovi Store, it was often asked, “How do you expect to compete with the bigger players?” But with carriers and handset makers running to try to mimic the success of Apple’s App Store, Getjar is now considered partner material.
What’s changed? Patrick Mork, the company’s marketing head, said that apps have come of age, and grown up from what was once considered a “geeky subset buried deep on the phone’s menu” to something that’s now mainstream. The consumer demand, he believes, has prompted carriers to rethink how they look at the company and its offering. Mork added that Getjar the company has grown up too, and attracts much better brands and their applications, which has had the effect of bringing in more recognizable app brands.
