Gameloft Sees Opportunities In Feature Phones As Others Abandon The Market

Gameloft (EPA: GFT) is one of Apple’s biggest fans. In the first six months of the year, revenues from Gameloft titles grew 82 percent in the App Store, and in the first quarter, it claimed that 21 percent of all of its revenues came from Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) products, as well. But that’s not where it sees the only opportunity.

The Paris-based company said it will continue to grow its market share of games on feature phones, like Java and Brew, as a result of the withdrawal from other competitors. In addition, it said recent “high-performance” smartphones by Samsung, Nokia (NYSE: NOK) and Google (NSDQ: GOOG) should continue sustaining Gameloft’s growth in quarters to come.

With the emergence of smartphones, and most notably the iPhone, many game studios took a step back from producing as many feature phone titles, which required supporting a wide swath of devices and negotiating with the carriers. Last year, THQ announced its intentions to only support smartphones, and Glu Mobile (NSDQ: GLUU) only recently started investing in social games for smartphones.

Gameloft, which only releases a handful of figures on a quarterly basis, said revenues in the first six months totaled $84.3 million (€66.6 million), up 11 percent from the first half of 2009. Gameloft said it kept costs down to improve operating margins to 8.8 percent in the first half, compared to 7.6 percent during the first half of 2009. Net profit for the six-month period totaled $6.7 million, up 140 percent since the year-ago period.

The company has $32.8 million (€25.9 million) in net cash and equivalents, leaving it wiggle room to continue to invest. In a release, it said: “In the long term, Gameloft appears to be in an ideal position to benefit from the rapid emergence of the digital distribution of video games on mobile phones, tablets and consoles.”
