G1 Live: Brin And Page Enter On Rollerblades
Need some more evidence that this is a big deal for Google? The “one more thing” at this event are surprise guests from Google (NSDQ: GOOG) co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page. For reasons not exactly clear (except that they’re young and cool), the pair skated into the stage on Rollerblades, joking that it was the best way to get in on Manhattan’s busy streets.

—Brin: “I’m a geek, and the way I grew up I was able to write my own programs for the PC. I got that same pleasure playing on the G1, and I’ve been using it for awhile now.” He said much to the chagrin of the folks on the stage, he wrote an application that would time how long the phone was in the air when he tossed it up. “I haven’t put it in the app store yet, but I should think about that, but maybe I won’t,” he joked…“It’s exciting for me to have a phone that I can play with and modify and innovate on.”
—Page: “I am tremendously enjoying using the G1. Andy knows because I’ve been giving him lots of feedback…There’s about 3 billion mobile phones and a billion new ones every year. This is as good of a computer as you had a couple of years ago, and by having access to the Internet, it was a tremendous opportunity. We used to give this example: If we asked you to do a Web search [on your phone] to see how it long it takes…The speed difference of using a phone and a laptop is still pretty big, and you don’t have your laptop with you, especially if you are rollerblading. We are excited about that. I think that’s a big element of this, and by having computer functionality on the phone, and by having an open ecosystem and being able to do creative things, especially with the ability of being able to use LBS, I think you’ll see a lot of interesting things.”
