Last week Stanford University hosted a discussion panel titled “Indian Wireless Market—Why Mobile?, Why India?, Why Now?”, discussing the future of mobile value-added services market. Along with the panel, graduate student at the Management Science school Mohit Gundecha and his team did a formal research study of the Indian mobile market, and among the key points, the forecast on the market growth remains conservative, due to structural issues with operators and revenue share problems with the VAS players. It said growth during near term will flatten as operators do not shift focus from customer acquisition to VAS promotion quickly enough, thus new low end users will drag down the per capita consumption. The real growth willl come after 2010. The full 138-page PDF report is here for download.

Also, the panel discussing this report and the Indian market included: Eric Allen, VP, FunMobility (Moderator). Panelists: Ashok Narsimhan, Chairman and CEO, July Systems; Ojas Rege, VP, Global Mobile Products, Yahoo;  Vin Dham, Executive Managing Director, NEA-IndoUS Ventures; Niren Shah, Managing Director, Norwest Venture Partners; and Chetan Sharma, President, Chetan Sharma Consulting.

Mohit generously provided us with three videos, the first one on the presentation about the research, and the second and third are part 1 and part 2 of the discussion panel. All these are embedded after the jump, below (RSS readers will have to click through):
