Fox Launches Ad-Funded Mobile Sites
Fox Interactive Media (NYSE: NWS) has announced it will launch free, ad-supported mobile sites for some of its brands, including MySpace, FoxSports.com, game network IGN, AskMen and RottenTomatoes.com. This is the first free mobile offering for MySpace: The subscriptions services that are available on some carriers will continue—Fox hopes to target a wider user base by opening the sites to all comers. The ads (handled by Millennial Media) will start with charter sponsorships in MySpace Mobile Web, while the other sites will have more traditional display-based ads. More details at MocoNews.net.

I believe we will see more companies offering “free” mobile services that are ad-supported, it is good to see MySpace finally moving in this direction. There is a potential catalyst here to see greater mobile internet adoption and another piece of the garden wall to fall. MySpace did a pretty good job with their mobile site too - bringing the most relevant features to the forefront. The mobile site primarily allows for easy “checking up” on the profile though. It doesn’t allow for easy updating to the profile, especially with standard phone functionality, like pictures, videos, and text via mms or sms technology on the phone. And it doesn’t push anything to the mobile yet, you still have to go access it, and log in when you want to view anything. There is still a lot of room for 3rd party innovation with mobile on MySpace.
