Just two weeks before President-Elect Barack Obama is sworn in as the country’s new leader, the FCC is working eagerly to squeeze in one final decision on whether it should auction off a swath of airwaves that mandates the winner to provide a free wireless broadband service. To help win over supporters, the plan’s biggest supporter, FCC Chair Kevin Martin, dropped one of the more controversial components of the plan—that the network must be porn-free.

Over the holidays, Martin told ArsTechnica, that the decision was simple. “I’m saying if this is a problem for people, let’s take it away. A lot of public interest advocates have said they would support this, but were concerned about the filter. Well, now there’s an item in front of the Commissioners and it no longer has the filter. And I’ve already voted for it without the filter now. So it’s already got one vote.”

At the time, none of the other commissioners had voted on the plan, and time is rapidly running out. A short telephone call is scheduled for tomorrow, and the commission’s final meeting is set for Jan. 15, five days before Obama’s inauguration. However, so far the agenda doesn’t say anything about a vote taking place on the plan. Martin is also scheduled to speak Jan. 10 at CES, but as with most of his public appearances so far, he may focus on speaking about the upcoming transition to digital TV.
