FCC Cancels Meeting And Leaves Wireless Broadband Plan Up In The Air

The FCC canceled its meeting on Thursday, which was expected to hear the fate of a controversial plan to auction off spectrum that would provide free nationwide Internet. Late last week, a pair of high-ranking lawmakers asked FCC Chair Kevin Martin to put aside the AWS-3 auction proposal to focus on the switch to digital TV, which is just two months away. Within hours, the FCC followed the advice and canceled the meeting. It probably didn’t help that just a day beforehand the White House said it opposed the plan. The proposal, which closely mirrored a plan floated by VC-backed M2Z Networks, now sits unsolved and will simply collect dust until President-elect Barack Obama nominates his choice for FCC chair and remakes the regulatory body in the next month. The meeting, likely Martin’s last as FCC head, was also scheduled to deal with rules for resolving disputes between cable providers and content companies. FCC Release (PDF).
