EU To Cap Cross-Border SMS At 11 Euro Cents Each
We already knew that European Union telecom ministers are meeting Thursday to discuss price caps on cross-border text messaging and mobile web surfing, but now it appears that the ministers will accept the commission’s proposed price caps. According to the International Herald Tribune, which has seen a copy of the plan, the ministers will support “almost verbatim” the proposal from EU telecom commissioner Viviane Reding to lower charges for sending a cross-border SMS to 11 euro cents ($0.14), and cutting the wholesale limit on roaming data charges to 1 euro ($1.28) per megabyte. They plan, as widely discussed, to reject her call for wider reforms in the industry, including creating a super regulator with the power to decide on national telecom issues. The price cuts will be discussed next by the European Parliament in the spring of next year. Should they clear—and it’s expected they will, as the Parliament overwhelmingly supported cutting voice roaming charges in 2007—the new prices will go into effect on July 1. We will update if any more news comes out of the actual meeting.
