EU May Force Carriers To Carry VoIP Traffic

Possible good news for Skype, which has seen its iPhone application launched earlier this month, blocked by Germany’s T-Mobile, the country’s exclusive iPhone network partner. Following the carrier’s declaration, the EU may now force carriers to allow VoIP applications to run on their networks. According to German newspaper, Handelsblatt, the EU, in its new telecoms directive, has been hammering out rules that would prevent carriers from blocking VoIP traffic, but the wording of the draft, according to EU Telecoms Commissioner Viviane Reding, is still “not as clear as we would wish.” The EU has apparently urged national regulators to stop companies, such as the carriers, from blocking these services, which they consider an abuse of their market dominance. Meanwhile, the EU’s threats don’t seem to have much effect on a recalcitrant T-Mobile, which fully acknowledged that its ban is a controversial one: “We are [skating] on thin ice,” a spokesperson told Handelsblatt.
