Electronic Arts Says Mobile Revenues Jumped 12 Percent This Year

Electronic Arts (NSDQ: ERTS) surprised analysts today by recording a profit during its fourth fiscal quarter.

The company’s strong results were driven by major game launches, like Mass Effect 2, and Dante’s Inferno, but the game-maker is also looking at its digital group to make an impact, too. While mobile revenues are still a small fraction of the overall company’s results, they are growing and are more significant compared to other leaders in the space.

For the fourth quarter ended March 31, EA reported net income of $30 million, or 9 cents a share, on revenues of $979 million. Mobile revenues totaled $55 million in the period, increasing 14.6 percent over the past year. Mobile revenues for the full-year totaled $212 million, up 12 percent from 2009.

Those are fairly strong results compared to Paris-based Gameloft (EPA: GFT), which may be its next-closest competitor. Gameloft said first-quarter revenues totaled $43.7 million, jumping 7 percent compared to the same period a year ago.

Other mobile highlights:

—EA’s iPad games were not calculated into the results because the launch occurred a few days after the quarter ended, but EA said it had five games on the iPad, including Need For Speed Shift, Mirrors Edge, Scrabble, Tetris and Command & Conquer Red Alert.

—Scrabble was the top grossing paid game on the iPad, and overall, EA Mobile had four out of the top 10 and five out of the top 20 grossing iPad games.

—In fiscal year 2010, EA Mobile launched 37 iPhone games and 50 mobile titles.
