@ EconSM: Taking Social Media To Mobile Is An Experimentation For Some; Risks Exist

Almost the entire ContentNext gang is in the Los Angeles hills at the Skirball Cultural Center for EconSM, an entire day’s worth of panels and speakers on the topic of the economics of social media. I’ve been eager to pick up on the mobile trends by big players, such as YouTube, the Wall Street Journal and Sports Illustrated. The mentions have been limited—since the speakers are more focused on the Web today—but here are a few thoughts that are worth mentioning:

Jordan Hoffner, YouTube’s head of content partnerships: The iPhone was really important. “It’s not just about being an Internet distributor, it’s about capturing the traffic from the phone and YouTube.” He said it’s not only about content being watched on a phone, but also being uploaded from the phone. “Our strategy is to be where people want to consume this stuff.”

The most discussion surrounding mobile came during the traditional media panel, which provided a sober message that you won’t find on Twitter—going mobile is not a big priority and has some risks. The panel featured the Wall Street Journal Digital Network, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (NYSE: MSO), SI Digital and USA Today. Audience members pressed the panelists on their interest in mobile, and in citizen journalism, in general.

Gordon McLeod, President, The Wall Street Journal Digital Network: “It hasn’t gotten on our radar yet…We are focused on our journalism. Recently, we gave 60 cameras to field reporters. That’s the state we are in; I’m not sure if we’d ever go that far.” When answering a question about how the WSJ is providing content to the Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN) Kindle, he said: “For us it’s about experimenting, and putting content in front as many people as we can. Kindle is interesting.”

Jeff Price, President, SI Digital: “One of the struggles in sports we are seeing right now is the right’s issue.” If a fan takes video at a game and uploads it to their Web site, who owns the content? “We don’t want to enable something for fans that puts us at risk.”

Kinsey Wilson, Executive Editor, USA Today: “We are moving slowly there, but when we look at user-generated content and breaking news, it doesn’t come to a site like ours. That’s not the identity we have, unlike CNN.

  • What part of, "We are news organizations that have a long tradition of integrating UGC in the form of listener call-ins, and want to get our audio into as many phones as possible so listeners can contribute their opinions back to us to enhance our brands as well as create community around our programs" did this conference not understand?

    Honestly, our new social media launch will work with consumers, if the industry itself can pay attention ling enough to see value here.
