Japanese carrier Softbank reported quarterly earnings today, which saw its net profit from July-September climb 1.9 percent to 21.7 billion yen ($225 million), boosted by strong sales of the iPhone. The company had its highest monthly net additions in subscribers in 17 consecutive months, adding 521,400 in the quarter. It now has a total of 19.6 million customers, which it says helped boost its market share 1.5 percentage points to 18.7 percent. In comparison, NTT DoCoMo has 51.5 percent, and KDDI has 29 percent.

A Softbank spokesman told AP, “The iPhone certainly supported our profit and boosted the number of new mobile phone subscribers during the quarter… Since the July launch, iPhone sales have been very good.” Softbank, however, did not reveal how many of the gadgets had been sold.

Revenue in the quarter fell 2.8 percent year on year to 681.7 billion yen ($7 billion), blamed on falling sales of handsets. Sales from Softbank’s mobile phone unit, which makes up 60 percent of the company’s revenue, was down 5.1 percent to 401.3 billion yen ($4.2 billion).
