Yesterday, Sony (NYSE: SNE) Ericsson (NSDQ: ERIC) started implementing a reorganization that it said back in July would eliminate up to 2,000 jobs. The Register reports more details today on where those cuts will take place, and where Sony Ericsson’s development centers will be focused going forward. It wrote that the company’s user-interface center will be based in Beijing, and that its California development center in San Diego will focus on its Windows Mobile devices, including the Xperia X1. Job cuts—about 450—will be made in its North Carolina operation, and going forward its Symbian development will take place in the company’s Lund office, near Malmo in Sweden, but that Symbian application development won’t be a priority—likely because the operating system is in a period of transition as it gets open-sourced by Nokia. Likewise, the fate of the company’s UIQ office in Ronneby, Sweden is unclear since UIQ, which is a joint venture between Motorola and Sony Ericsson, will be discontinued going forward (with offices in London and Budapest already closing).
