@ CTIA: Nokia Continues Services Push With Ovi; Adds Contact Back-Up

imageNokia (NYSE: NOK) said today it is adding new features to Ovi as it continues to reinvent itself as a services company rather than focusing itself as being a handset manufacturer. Now, people using Ovi will be able to back-up their contacts, calendar, notes and tasks between their phone and Ovi.com. This functionality is not new, and many carriers today offer a paid service, however, it will be free through Ovi. The service falls short of offering a something like Apple’s (NSDQ: AAPL) new MobileMe, which syncs all your contacts, email and content between the Web, PC and phone.

Lenn Pryor, Nokia’s VP of product marketing for the Services and Software, said in an interview: “You could do this already already if you use Outlook or and if you use Google (NSDQ: GOOG). We aren’t doing direct import. This is about helping people use their device. The U.S. is a different scenario. For a lot of people around the world, their phone is their primary computer, and they won’t upgrade because they can’t get phone contacts out of their phone and into the cloud, where they can access them from an Internet cafe or PC…We haven’t invented over-the-air-sync to the Web, but we’re making it available to our customers for free.”

Currently, the service will be supported on 75 different Series 40 and 60 devices.
