China Mobile Communications, parent company to the country’s largest mobile network China Mobile, will begin testing China’s homegrown 3G wireless standard from April 1, reports Dow Jones (NYSE: NWS) (via Cellular News). The network is issuing 20,000 mobile phones to selected customers so they can test the TD-SCDMA standard during the three-month trial, while another 40,000 phones will be sold in stores. Eight cities have been chosen for the trial including Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Shenyang, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Xiamen and Qinhuangdao. A spokesperson for the company said at this point it was still unknown if the 3G standard will be available in time for the games in August.
