The Consumer Electronics Association has thrust itself into the mobile TV standardization process by working with a group, which is defining the characteristics of a mobile/handheld features that will be added to the ATSC’s broadcast digital TV standards in the U.S. The group, called at the Advanced Television Systems Committee, is expected to make a final determination in the coming months. The ATSC Mobile/Handheld capability will enable broadcasters to use their existing spectrum holdings to deliver mobile services to handsets and backseat televisions in cars. The CEA has created a “special interest group” to help inform consumer electronics companies about the technology and market opportunities.

Brandon Burgess, president of the Open Mobile Video Coalition (a group of more than 800 TV stations), said in a press release: “We expect the CEA’s recognition of the potential and maturity of mobile DTV technology – coupled with the ATSC’s commitment to approve an M/H standard—to further accelerate the development of handheld devices, content and other applications. Consumers are even closer to having real-time, full-motion broadcast television on mobile and handset devices.” Release.
