Broadcom Wins Patent Infringement Case Against Qualcomm

Although it has been eclisped by the higher-profile patent battle between Qualcomm and Nokia, the patent infringement suit brought by Broadcom against Qualcomm could also have a significant effect on the mobile industry. A jury has awarded Broadcom $19.6 million in damages and court costs against Qualcomm, reports RCR News, which goes on to note that “a June 18 hearing has been set to consider Broadcom’s request for a permanent injunction against Qualcomm to bar further infringement”. If granted, that would bar the import of EV-DO and WCDMA handsets and is the real problem for Qualcomm—the amount given in damages isn’t going to affect it strongly one way or the other, but the finding gives Broadcom a much stronger position in licensing agreements. Qualcomm has said it will challenge the result.
