Broadcasters Approve Final Mobile Digital TV Standard

An organization representing a broad set of companies in the broadcast industry has approved a technical standard for transmitting video to devices, completing a two-year process that will open the door to local broadcast stations to deliver mobile TV to phones, laptops and cars. Release.
The Advanced Television Systems Committee approved the A/153 ATSC Mobile DTV Standard late late night, and was voted in with “overwhelming support by the full ATSC membership,” according to the organization. ATSC President Mark Richer: “Development and adoption of the ATSC Mobile DTV Standard is a major milestone in the ongoing evolution of digital television.”
Previously, the Open Mobile Video Coalition has said that 70 stations are on track to launch mobile DTV services later this year, though real consumer devices probably won’t hit the streets until 2010.
