Blockbuster Planning Mobile Movie Development With Handset Makers
Blockbuster, (NYSE: BBI) the video rental chain, is in talks with all major handset makers to strike up possible partnerships that would give consumers an easy way to watch movies on their mobiles, Reuters reports. Speaking at the Reuters (NSDQ: RTRSY) Media Summit in London, CEO James Keyes said he’d first clued into watching movies on his Blackberry after getting help from Blackberry maker RIM’s (NSDQ: RIMM) joint-CEO Jim Balsillie as well an unnamed techie from his own company. He now downloads movies from the store’s Movielink online service to a storage card that then gets inserted into his Blackberry. “The challenge is: how do I make this convenient for everybody?,” Keyes said. The company, which took a beating over its Total Access product aimed at competing with rival Netflix, (NSDQ: NFLX) certainly needs to find something to replace the stagnating rentals from its stores and its struggling online service.
