The BlackBerry TiVo (NSDQ: TIVO) app, which allows users to remotely schedule recordings of TV shows on their set-top box, is now available, reports Boy Genius.

Research In Motion originally announced the application slightly more than a year ago, as part of a number of applications that were designed to make the BlackBerry more appealing to consumers. The two companies said the app would be released in 2008, and that future versions were going to add the ability to play video. Unfortunately, the application is now about a year late and still users cannot watch recorded content, which at this point in the game is pretty weak. As Boy Genius puts it: “BlackBerry for TiVo sounds pretty great expect for one huge thing: you can’t watch what you’ve recorded.”

It’s unclear what took so long, however, the delay may be explained by one of TiVo’s partners going out of business. Action Engine, which built applications that ran across a variety of mobile operating systems, was purchased shortly after the announcement. While MobUI picked up the company’s assets, you can see how things may have been held up in the process. MobUI still lists TiVo as a customer on its web site, although it is unclear what role they played in building the application. Meanwhile, the TiVo app was unveiled for the iPhone last November.
