BlackBerry Allows Web Publishers To Push Content To Subscribers’ Phones

imageIn an effort to become more consumer-friendly, and expand upon its reputation for being a strong email device, Research In Motion is now letting Web publishers send content to a user’s BlackBerry by using its signature push technology. RIM (NSDQ: RIMM) unveiled the service, called BlackBerry Web Signals, at the company’s developer conference yesterday. The company hopes Web publishers will want to use it to send updates on things like news, weather, sports, entertainment financial information and more. Alan Brenner, RIM’s SVP, said: “Push technology makes a night-and-day difference to the mobile experience and BlackBerry Web Signals will help online content providers add value for their customers while driving significant additional traffic to their web sites.” A number of developers will launch services using the technology soon: CBC, the Canada public news network, will use it to deliver breaking news to subscribers; Dada Entertainment will use it to deliver alerts about new music tracks based on a user’s favorite artists; Thumbplay will use it to let customers know about the latest music, games and videos; and washingtonpost.com will send out breaking-news alerts.
