Best Buy, which has been progressively pushing mobile into their big-box electronics stores, said it’s taking another step by opening up standalone mobile stores in malls around the U.S. The 3,000-square-foot Best Buy Mobile stores will sell mobile phones, laptops and other handhelds, and will also focus on teaching customers how the devices work together. The stores are meant to target people who aren’t as likely to visit their regular retail locations, such as women and teenagers, and in a more hands-on fashion, the stores will focus on helping customers pick the right phone for them; setting it up; and offering repairs and loaner phones. Three stores will launch in malls this month, including The Mall of America in Bloomington, Minn. tomorrow; Fair Oaks Mall in Fairfax, Va. tomorrow and Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, Ill. on Oct. 31. Release.

Best Buy Mobile is a joint venture created between Best Buy and UK mobile retailer Carphone Warehouse in 2006. On Tuesday, Carphone Warehouse provided details of its massive European expansion plans, which will require an investment of £90 million ($154 million), and calls for building 100 big-box Best Buy Europe stores over the next five years, and a smaller format store that will be called “Wireless World”, which will sell cellphones, along with TVs, gaming devices, laptops and broadband cards.
