Apple Revamps App Store To Help With Discoverability

Last night, Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) revamped the App Store to help solve one of the problems it faces as it gets bigger—how do you discover new applications when there’s 10,000 applications and growing? According to a developer who had contacted AppleInsider, Apple is now breaking out the most popular applications on each category page, and separating out the most popular Free Apps, which previously dominated the most popular listings, from most popular Paid Apps. Cnet points out that while this information has been available on the iPhone version of the App Store since the 2.2 firmware update, users searching for new applications on iTunes did not have the same experience.

The redesign will allow more applications to get more exposure. For instance, when you click on the Entertainment category, you see the main section, where it lists “A&AM Card Viewer, A Christmas SnowPhone, A Deck of Cards, and A Haunted Halloween. But in separate charts on the sides, it highlights both the top paid apps, and the top free apps. All of the results are different. The top paid apps are iBeer and Koi Pond and Be Like Lil’ Wayne, and the top free apps are Joost, Backgrounds and Movies.

  • People have develop quite a few very interesting apps, one of my favourite has to be the fake drinking beer apps for iPhone, there was even law suit case going on about that one, regarding copy right issues.
