Apple Releases Software Update For iPhone
The iPhone has been thoroughly lionized, but as much as users love the device, they also complain incessantly about dropped calls and voice quality.
Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) today released a new software update that aims to tackle those issues and offers some other updates.
Here’s some other changes the 246.4-megabit file brings to the iPhone and iPod Touch:
—Google (NSDQ: GOOG) Maps now has street view and public transit and walking directions. It will also display the address of a place when you drop a pin on the screen and allows you to share your location via email.
—Podcasts can be downloaded directly to the iPhone using Wi-Fi or 3G
—Fixes bug that affected scheduled email retrieval
—Improves Safari’s stability and performance
—Improves sound quality of voicemails and decreases dropped calls
—Keyboard auto-correction feature can now be turned off
And yet, as VentureBeat points out, it’s what’s still missing from the iPhone that might be most important to users. When Apple announced the iPhone 3G last June, it talked about plans to release a push-notification system that would enable applications to run in the background, but still alert users to changes, like a new message on Facebook, for example. Apple’s been quiet on that for some time now. Basic features like MMS, voice dialing and cut-and-paste support are still missing as well.
