Apple Exploring Bid For Wireless Spectrum: Report; 1 Million iPhones Sold; Sim Unlocking Site Live

The more the merrier ... A la Google (NSDQ: GOOG), Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) has considered bidding in the pending wireless spectrum auction, or so says BusinessWeek, citing unidentified sources.  Set for Jan. 16, 2008, the FCC auction puts up for bid spectrum being returned by analog broadcasters in 2009. Google CEO Eric Schmidt has said the company “probably” will take part in the bidding. But, BW says, Apple, leery of a low-margin massive proposition, is leaning the other way. Lots of blue sky in the piece as people try to second-guess Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

iPhone sales: Wish we’d started a pool as soon as Jobs mentioned plans to ship the 1 millionth iPhone this month were still on track coupled with a 33 percent price drop. Today’s announcement: Apple sold #1,000,000 Sunday thus providing Jobs with another publicity opp.

Update: One of the many companies scrambling to make a business out of unlocking the iPhone launched this afternoon. iPhoneSimFree claims that it’s the fastest and easiest of the hacks out there. You can download a tutorial from the site and/or buy licenses from the list of retailers supplied on the site. Engadget and Gizmodo have videos of the process for those who still want to see more Apple iPhone subversion.
