@ Apple Event: The Latest Stats On The iPhone

Today in Cupertino, Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) is unveiling its third version of its iPhone operating system, but first, the company provided an update on where the iPhone stands today.

iPhone: The iPhone is in 80 countries around the world; the company said it would sell 10 million in first calendar year, but it sold 13.7 million in calendar 2008 and sold 17 million iPhones up until December 2008. This also provides a great opportunity for app developers. 50,000 iPhone developers join its developer program, over 60 percent of which had never developed for Apple before.

App Store: The App Store now has 25,000 apps; 96 percent of apps submitted have been approved, and 98 percent of the apps were approved in seven days or less. And, now it’s passed 800 million downloads in eight months time.
