Alcatel-Lucent Buys OpenPlug To Help Fill A Gap In The Mobile App Space
Paris-based Alcatel-Lucent is acquiring OpenPlug to have its own solution for helping developers move applications from one platform to the next operating system. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. This is the second acquisition Alcatel-Lucent has made in the past three months to help it expand beyond telecom infrastructure to get into the application ecosystem. In June, it acquired ProgrammableWeb, a company with API-related content.
Alcatel-Lucent says developers who use OpenPlug can create and deploy applications in record time across multiple devices and app stores—a promise many companies have made before. The software works across iPhone, Android, Symbian, Windows Mobile and Linux.
“Being able to provide more applications across multiple devices helps service providers significantly broaden their app store content to create more value for consumers,” said Laura Merling, VP of Alcatel-Lucent’s global developer strategy. “And this isn’t purely a mobile play - the software can be extended to support application development for IPTV set top boxes, game consoles, even the ng Connect LTE Connected Car.”
