5 Percent Of Europeans Interested In Mobile TV: Report

Only 5 percent of Europeans expressed an interest in watching television or video on their mobile phones in the next 12 months, according to a Gartner survey reported by Reuters. “I think the main reason is the compromise you are making on the device you need to carry to watch TV—either too big if you want a nice experience or too small and you do not have a good experience,” said Carolina Milanesi, a Gartner analyst. This compares to 20 percent of Asians saying they would watch TV on their phones. Take-up of mobile TV is also being hampered by “a lack of consensus on business models, variety of different technologies and shortage of airwaves” according to the article…which may be all fine and well, but doesn’t address the issue of consumer interest. A recent report from Juniper predicted 120 million mobile TV watchers worldwide by 2012, which will probably be less than 4 percent of the mobile phone user base.
