4G Round-Up: Clearwire’s New Bundles; Ericsson Launches World’s ‘First LTE’ Site
—Clearwire (NSDQ: CLWR) Offers less expensive bundles: Clearwire has started to offer a wireless broadband pricing package that includes both a home and away modem for $55 a month, reports MuniWireless.com. Clearwire is offering a “Pick 2” offering, which allows a user to choose either a mobile and home connection — or two mobile connections — for just $55 a month. The regular price is $80 a month, and compares to a typical wireless modem, offered by a wireless carrier, which costs about $60 a month. Download speeds are advertised at 6 Mbps. The offering also includes the company’s Clear Spot product, which converts the WiMax signal into Wi-Fi. That device costs $139.99, while the Clearwire USB modem costs $70.
—Ericsson (NSDQ: ERIC) and TeliaSonera launch LTE site: Ericsson said today that in partnership with TeliaSonera, the two have reportedly “unveiled the world’s first commercial Long-Term Evolution (LTE) site in Stockholm, Sweden.” While it may be live, the site will not actually be part of a commercial network until sometime in 2010. But the launch of the site, provides some validation to the technology, which is still in the process of becoming standardized, unlike WiMax, which is already an official standard today. Ericsson says it has already demonstrated peak rates of 160 Mbps, however, the average rate in real-life conditions, will likely be much lower. Release.
